Our Learning Environment
At Dorothy Hughes Kindergarten we have a sizeable outdoor area providing plenty of opportunities for children to extend their range of physical skills and strengthen their physical abilities. Through the use of climbing equipment we teach spatial concepts such as: over, under, through etc. As well as encouraging children to engage in problem-solving and non-competitive forms of physical challenges
confidently, while increasing gross motor development. We have plenty of outdoor shaded area's supplying shelter all year round.
We encourage children to experiment with a range of materials for planning and design and to enjoy the experience of working cooperatively with others.
Children are given the opportunity to explore a variety of art forms including visual arts, drama, music, dance and media.
Children are supported in the development of skills, techniques and strategies to nurture their exploration of the arts, and encourage fine motor development.
Children are encouraged to help with cooking on occasion. This is a social
activity which helps facilitate the development of fine motor muscles as well as
numeracy concepts including measurement, capacity and number, oral language
skills and social networking.
We use book-based learning as a means to help children understand the context of familiar stories through the use of props and dramatic play.
Our Multiliteracies focus encourages children to share and present ideas using a variety of different media, such as individual writing books, computers and using a digital camera. Children are taught how to follow processes when using technology, such as the care and use of the tools, manipulation of controls such as the computer mouse and keyboard as well as switching between software applications. A variety of media and programs are available for all children to access.
